How to Maximize PTO in 2027: Turn 15 PTO Days Into 56 Days Off

You can maximize PTO in 2027 by taking your days off right next to holidays and weekends. With 15 PTO days, that gets you 56 days off. Below are the exact dates to request, and you can map your own plan with my free PTO Planner.

When you take one PTO day next to a Monday holiday and a weekend, one day off turns into four. Do that all year, add two longer breaks, and your PTO goes a lot further than you think.

Which days should I take off in 2027 to maximize PTO?

Start with the four-day weekends. Each one costs you a single PTO day.

Holiday 2027 date PTO day to take Days off
New Year's DayFriday, January 1Monday, January 44
MLK DayMonday, January 18Friday, January 154
Presidents' DayMonday, February 15Friday, February 124

Juneteenth (observed)Friday, June 18Monday, June 214
Labor DayMonday, September 6Friday, September 34
Indigenous Peoples' DayMonday, October 11Friday, October 84
Veterans DayThursday, November 11Friday, November 124
Total8 PTO days32

That's 8 PTO days for 32 days off. Juneteenth lands on a Saturday in 2027, so it's observed on Friday, June 18.

What are the best weeks to take off in 2027?

The 4th of July and Thanksgiving give you the longest breaks for the fewest PTO days. Book these first, because everybody wants them.

4th of July week. The 4th lands on a Sunday, so most jobs give you Monday, July 5 off. Take off Tuesday, July 6 through Friday, July 9, and you're off from Saturday, July 3 to Sunday, July 11. That's 9 days for 4 PTO days.

Thanksgiving week. Take off Monday, November 22 through Wednesday, November 24. If your job gives you Black Friday, you're off from Saturday, November 20 to Sunday, November 28. That's 9 days for 3 PTO days.

Do you get long weekends at Christmas and New Year's 2027?

Yes. Christmas Day and New Year's Day 2028 both fall on a Saturday. Most jobs give you the Friday before off, which is Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31. That's two 3-day weekends without using any PTO.

How 15 PTO days adds up to 56 days off

  • 8 four-day weekends: 8 PTO days, 32 days off

  • 4th of July week: 4 PTO days, 9 days off

  • Thanksgiving week: 3 PTO days, 9 days off

  • Christmas and New Year's weekends: 0 PTO days, 6 days off

That's 15 PTO days for 56 days off, so every PTO day turns into almost 4 days away from work.

What if I only get 9 PTO days?

Keep all 8 four-day weekends, take Friday, July 2 off for the 4th, and skip the Thanksgiving week. If your job gives you Black Friday, you still get Thanksgiving through Sunday off. That's 9 PTO days for 46 days off.

Check your company's 2027 holiday calendar first

I'm counting the federal holidays plus Black Friday, and not every job closes on all of those days. A lot of jobs work MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Juneteenth, Indigenous Peoples' Day, and Veterans Day. If yours does, those weekends cost 2 PTO days instead of 1. In the PTO Planner, remove the holidays you work and add the ones your job gives you, and it rebuilds your plan.

Get your time off requests in early

At a lot of jobs, time off is first come, first served, and the 4th of July and Thanksgiving weeks go fast. Put in those two breaks as soon as your job starts taking 2027 requests. If your team needs coverage, have a plan ready when you ask. Put in the long weekends a few months ahead.

Save for each trip with a sinking fund

Once you know your breaks, give each trip its own sinking fund. If your Thanksgiving trip will cost $900 and it's 13 months away, set aside about $70 a month starting now. The trip is paid for before you leave, and you won't be paying off a credit card in January.
